Magic Vocals Needed!!!
I'm Dan, 27, keyboardist/pianist/song-writer/programmer, living in London (SE). I'm looking for the right person to help me realise my music and put together a band... I know you're out there!
I'm currently working on putting a band together, built around a keane/coldplay/radiohead sound on one hand, a Zero-7 / Air / Lemon Jelly sound on the other, with some great songs and backed by a indie, DIY approach to distribution.
I'm totally DIY- I have a company that does music subscriptions and I intend to sell music directly down the web to the audience- so you'll be in with a share of the proceeds.
What I think will happen then is I'd map out a couple of sessions where we'd try-things out and see how it goes. After that, we can decide if its working or not.. I need people who can turn up and work straight away at their best, and be honest and open and take criticism.
I'm re-inventing myself along the lines of Zero7/Air/Massive Attack, with an electronic angle to a keyboard-driven sound. I have my own recording setup at home (SE London), where I'm going to put together a new band line-up, work on a demo, ahead of a full recording.
I have a few tracks that are complete enough for vocals straight away, so what I have in mind is for potential collaborators to have a listen to this material, and then we can have two or three sessions when we see how well we gel and how things go.
I've auditioned many singers already, and I've been learning a few things about the process, what works and what doesn't. I've learned that being too specific, trying to fit square pegs into round holes can't work, so I'm keeping an open-mind and I am ready to work with the right person to arrive at the best sound. I think that I would work best with a motivated person, who was free to commit to this project as their number one priority, who can bring their ability to find melodies, improvise and perhaps write lyrics (as a bonus), to match with my inventiveness in the music. Previous experience is desirable, but not essential. The main thing is to have a strong belief without egoism and conviction, that I find is only a barrier to creativity.
Around this core, I can easily add percussion / guitar players if needed, although I am comfortable with the idea of having a small band, 2-3 people, with guest players if necessary.
I am devoted to music, and want to take things to a level when we are touring internationally, releasing music independently on-line and living the dream everyday. I need someone with equal dedication, so please consider if this is you before you contact me.
I believe that music and creativity is the highest pursuit of human endeavour, the reason for it all.. the big one! I will be working on music in whatever capacity for the rest of my life; I think its all a journey we embark on, that is full of chance and good and evil; but if we keep going then we can only grow and enhance. I see this project as an important stepping stone that I want to get right, not for money/fame but for ourselves.
I am a Grade 7 pianist, with a classical upbringing, which rubs-off onto my songs, which broadly fall into a spectrum of electro-progressive rock, from Radiohead/Kid A/Coldplay to the Massive Attack / Air thing. I have my own equipment: pianos, digital and analogue synths, and recording gear. I have the means to make my own demos, distribute them on-line, and do the entire thing.
If I'm honest, I think that the only reason why I haven't gone further up until now was my reluctance to accept the transition from my previous band, along with a very high standard expected of my vocal partners. I now realise that I am truly embarking on a new project, with a new bunch of material, and I am looking for an equal partner in the vocal department. I still require a world-class vocal, but I think that I'm more open-minded as to what shape that will take. For this reason, I'm deliberately not limiting my search to a male or a female; but I think that you must be both into my music and into these influences. If you have similar tastes, but have a specific other influence, get in touch, chances are I've heard of them and like them!
I'm very excited about this prospect, and I hope to hear from you soon.
Cheers Dan
HOW TO APPLY
In the past, I found that handling lots of demos difficult, so it would help me enormously if you didn't send me e-mail attachments, but rather links to something, even if its myspace, yousendit or something like that.
Please get in touch if you have a world-class, A-list, tip-top, uber-voice: NOT IN THE STYLE OF A BOY BAND PLEASE!
Please also send us a link to something we can hear you singing on... its vitally important: if you apply with just a C.V. it's completely useless to us: please don't send me attachments as I can't handle 100s of files, send me a link to a webpage I can hear you on. Also tell me a bit about yourself and the relevant experience.
If you're not interested or can't make this, but know someone else who does, please forward it on as its a perfect opportunity for the right person to make a career with a minimum of effort. The right person walks into a studio, makes a hit record and starts making dosh and going giggin' straight away...
I know you're out there! Come and find me!
