Musician Search Sites Part I: BandMix
The masochist in me has decided to put myself all over the musican search websites (again), to hopefully open the door to some decent collaborators to form a new band with. I'll be creating profiles over the coming days, and maybe mention a few words by way of review as I go along.
BandMix is from that irritating species of website that deliberately cripples itself in the hope that you pay to access its full features. Its a bit like a footballer who tries for a team by stamping on his own foot with a garden fork before telling the manager that he'll be great once you start paying him. It was probably an innovative idea in 2001, but nowadays it makes for a community of ghosts, probably all of whom are non-paying memebers, so it seems unlikely that I'll get any messages through. I have put a link to this site on the profile though, so I'm hoping for the double-whammy of a decent vocalist who is also intelligent enough to cut+paste my URL into their web-browser. The bar is set high I know...
So I go to upload some music. I've been generously allocated 15MB of space... which equates to about 2.6 actual MP3 files, so you have this annoying wait uploading the third track before it tells you that you don't have the quota. Wouldn't it be a more sensible thing to do to actually say that you can upload three tracks, and then allow more for a premium membership if that's really what you want to do?
I could go on, but I'm trying to keep positive. A note to any bandmix users out there who have a profile: it is essential that you either upload some tracks with you on it, or post a link: its never, ever, EVER going to be enough to state your enthusiasm or the incredible wedding gig you played. There are hundreds of thousands of people out there doing the same thing, why should I get in touch?
For what it's worth, I've put up a profile at http://www.bandmix.co.uk/etherphone. If you are a vocalist, please get in touch, or send to your friends on BandMix. I'm setting up a new band, in the style of Air/Zero 7/Radiohead/Coldplay/Massive Attack and I'm spending the next few months in my home studio getting material together. i've got some good contacts in the industry who can lend a critical ear and help on the production side, but right now I'm just a keyboardist with a lot of potential... I need a vocalist to take this far! I know you're there so stop being shy and get in touch. You can listen to stuff on my jukebox page, so leave me a comment and tell me what you reckon.
Peace!
